Abstract

Poverty is a major problem in our country. The Indian economy is basically a rural economy as even today near about 70 per cent of its population lives in rural area. That means the major part of poverty lives in rural areas. Most of the population is engaged in agriculture i.e. approximately fifty five per cent of the total working population. So, the Indian economy is regarded as agricultural economy. Overall development of the country, can not take place until and unless the rural sector of the economy shows rapid development. Unfortunately, our rural sector is backward poor and almost stagment since. Independence the government in our country has been making continuous and substantial efforts for the upliftment of the rural poor. But still a major a part of the population in rural sector is in the grip of number and starvation.
