Abstract

In October 1917, after the collapse of the Russian Empire, new states which declared their independence from Russia emerged in some national regions. The Mountainous Republic was established in the Northern Caucasus. The state was occupied by General Denikin's army fighting against Bolsheviks for the sake of indivisible integrity of Russia. Thus, the legal entity of the Mountainous Republic was terminated. However, this could not end the struggle for national independence in the Northern Caucasus. The struggle was sustained under the green flag of Islam. Imam Gotsinsky initiated a jihadi movement for the independence movement inherited from Imam Shamil, one of the leaders of the Imamate and the Caucasian War.The main goal of the movement that maintained in 1919 and 1920 was to form the Imamate, an Islamic state. One of the prominent theorists of the state was Najmuddin Gotsinsky. Gotsinsky, in order to attain his objective, made contact with actors in the region and Turkey, which had interests and plans related to the region. He was the leader of struggle against Bolsheviks until 1925, when he was executed by gunfire. The Bolshevik regime defeated the movement and established an atheist regime in the Caucasus, which lasted more than seventy years. Imam Gotsinsky was captured and executed by gunfire in 1925 after the Bolshevik rule in Dagestan. Thus, the jihadi movement aiming to reach independence of the Caucasus and to form an Islamic state was intercepted. However, the movement could not be suppressed and its echoes continued until the year of 1936. The movement losed its integrity as Imam Gotsinsky, the religious leader, was killed.
