Abstract

Retrospective study analysis has been carried out which includes 100 patients at the age 25-78 years who had undergone low anterior resection of rectum at the Ryazan Regional Clinical Hospital. The survey has been carried out in 3 groups on the basis of different treatment methods of rectal stump. The first group under study was made of 40 patients who underwent stump closure with the use of linear staplers for open surgery. The second group consisted of 20 patients who underwent stump closure with the use of the newest instrument CONTOUR. Comparison group was made of 40 patients who had stump closure with the use of manual purse-string suture followed by tightening on stylet of circumferential stapler and formation of anastomosis. Postoperative complications (lack of anastomosis) occurred in 4 cases (10,0%) in the comparison group and in 2 cases (5%) of the first group under study. Complications are not detected in cases when CONTOUR was used. Thus the use of CONTOUR for LAR has proved to be the most convenient and secure technique (with the minimum occurrence of complications), which is the least time-demanding and is also the selection principle in circumstances of anatomically contracted and deep-seated pelvis.
