Abstract
Today bananas and plantains are best known as a food crop, almost every part of the plant can be used in one way or another. Both banana and plantations are rich in nutrition, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Various parts of the banana plant itself can also be used for different purposes all over the world. In South East Asia, the banana leaf is used to wrap food (in the place of plastic bags and cling wraps). The leaves are also processed and its fiber used to produce type of tough, gunny- sack type cloth. In the Philippines, many parts of the banana plant are used to make handicraft. In Indonesia, the banana plant is used to make traditional medicine and as animal feed. Pseudo Stem based domestic industry plays an important role in reducing the unemployment and women play a vital role in this sector and increase the family income. India, the flowers from the banana tree are sacred. During religious and important ceremonies such as weddings, the banana flowers are tied around the head, for the believes this will bring good luck. Some of the other products made from banana includes values added products from banana fruits like banana puree, banana powder, banana catsup, banana flour, banana chips dried banana fritter, banana vinegar, banana wine, banana jam, banana jelly sweet coat bananas, place mats spun from banana fiber curry balls made from the core of the banana tree stem, chutneys, pickles, curry powder, organic tooth powder, traditional tribal medicines and cattle feed etc. Banana fibers are mostly used in making handicrafts, Eco Bags, Shopping Bags, Shirts Yarn and use in home decorative.
