Abstract

The Infectious complications of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) remains an important threat for a successful CAPD programme. We present a rare case of cutaneous zygomycosis presenting as an erythematous lesion over the anterior abdominal wall which progressed to involve the exit site. As the patient had no evidence of peritonitis, the CAPD catheter was retained. Zygomycosis is a rare pathogen of cutaneous infection despite being ubiquitous in soil, organic matter and water. Human infection occurs in immunocompromised hosts and can disseminate if not treated aggressively. The confirmation of this diagnosis requires a skin biopsy. This condition is a potentially treatable one if diagnosed early. The issues concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of the infection are discussed. This case is presented for rarity. The infectious complications like exitsite infection and peritonitis are the leading causes of technique failure, hospitalizations and mortality in CAPD patients by leading on to peritonitis. We hereby present a rare fungal infectious complication encountered in a CAPD patient and successful management of the same.
