Abstract
In this study, it was aimed to review the citizenship education at primary and secondary level in Turkey under the five sections: curriculum and structure, the participation of students and parents in school, students' community involvement, assessment and evaluation and support for teachers and principals. Key findings of the scientific research on the subject were examined and presented. In conclusion; it has found important in terms of the continuity of acquisitions that the citizenship education is to be taught as a compulsory subject in elementary school at grade 4th in the 2014-2015 academic year as well as integrated into other subjects. It has been noted to develop the course acquisitions supporting the social inclusion and in a nature of sensitive to multiculturalism. For an effective citizenship education it has been recommended that the teaching methods used should provide knowledge as well as skills and attitudes related to citizenship education, extra-class activities should be increased and process-oriented evaluation including different techniques. Also the importance of teacher qualifications and school administrators and school-family collaboration is emphasized in order to create a democratic school culture. The research findings may be guiding practitioners and researchers to increase the effectiveness of citizenship education in Turkey.
