COMPARATIVE STRUCTURAL AND SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF CERTAIN ENGLISH AND RUSSIAN ONCOLOGICAL TERMS (TUMORS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM)

Abstract

Background. The article presents the results of structural-semantic analysis of the existing in the English and Russian oncological terminology subsystem of the terms denoting tumors of the respiratory system. Objective of the research was to fulfill a structural-semantic analysis of the existing English and Russian oncological terms in the respiratory system and define their main structural-semantic patterns for their ordering and standardization of their formation. Material and methods. About 2000 terms have been estimated. 186 English and 151 Russian proper terms have been selected. In the study the following methods have been used: onomasiological, semanticological, comparative as well as the method of continuous selection and sorting and regulation of oncological terminology. Results. The selected terms have been classified. Their basic structural and semantic patterns as well as their main ways of formation in both languages have been revealed. The level of similarity among the considered terms in the Russian and English languages have been defined. Conclusions. Taking into consideration the results of our previous analogical studies in the fields of central nervous and digestive systems we have made the conclusion on the considerable similarity in the structure and semantics of the studied oncological terms of the respiratory system in the English and Russian languages that contributes to sorting and regulation of the terms denoting tumors.
