A Study of Aseptic Practices Related to Selected Nursing Care Activities Performed by Staff Nurses Working in an ICU of a Selected Hospital in Order to Develop and Administer a Need based On The Job Training (OJT) Program and Prepare a Booklet

Background: A nationwide study found a prevalence of sepsis within intensive care units of hospitals: one out of four patients admitted in ICUs contracted the ailments. Almost one out of two patients with sepsis died. The reasons for the rising incidence could be poor hospital hygiene.1 Aims: To assess the knowledge and practice of ICU staff nurses related to aseptic practices. Subjects and methods: Quantitative approach with the descriptive study was applied in this study. The study was conducted in the selected hospital with the sample size of 30. Purposive sampling technique was used. The data was collected using the Questionnaire and observation method. Self-reported knowledge questionnaire and observation checklist was used as tool to collect the data. Results: The finding of the study reveals that there were 24 (80%) staff nurses had average knowledge and 6 (20%) of them had low knowledge. Whereas in Catheter care, IV line care, Suctioning, Oral care, mask and cap, all the 30 (100%) staff nurses had inadequately or not at all performed the steps of procedure. Conclusion: This study concluded that Majority of the staff nurses had average knowledge, but less practice. So based on identified need for improvement, an On The Job Training (OJT) Program and booklet was developed and administered to the staff nurses in order to improve the knowledge and practices regarding aseptic techniques.
