6th Archeological Congress in Odessa: D. I. Yavornytsky's professional start

Abstract

The article deals with the participation of D. Yavornytsky in the 4th All-Russian Archaeological Congress in Odessa (1884) as one of the main factors of becoming a young scientist D. Yavornytsky and his self-identification as an archaeologist. In the days of the Russian Empire there were 15 such congresses but the 6th Archaeological Congress in Odessa was the largest number of participants. During the congress the 28-year-old Dmitry Yavornytsky had the opportunity to meet with prominent scientists and cultural figures of this time, with whom he kept creative contacts for a long time. Due to brilliant reports on the three-year study of lands of Zaporozhian Cossacks, as well as participation in an archaeological exhibition, D. Yavornytsky became known in wider circles of society. Multi-day sightseeing tour of the ancient sites of the Crimean peninsula, organized in the framework of 6th Congress, had expanded horizons of young scientist, made it possible for D. Yavornytsky to see methods of archaeological excavations in various parts of Crimea, which inspired him for further activities in the field of archeology, he continued to extreme old age and achieved significant success in this field. Creative contacts and activities of D. Yavornytsky during and after the 6th Congress are exemplified by living epistolary heritage of the scientist, as well as the periodicals of this time.
