Abstract
Abstract : Adenosine deaminase is an enzyme that irreversibly deaminates adenosine into ionosine.Adenosine increases the insulin sensitivity in many tissues. Thus increased adenosine deaminaseactivity decreases the tissue adenosine concentration, and thereby plays an important role in insulinresistance. ADA may also play a role in oxidative stress and immunological disturbances in Diabetesmellitus. The aim of the study is to evaluate the adenosine deaminase activity in type 2 DM patientsand to find out the correlation with hyperglycemia.50 normal healthy individuals were taken as controland 50 type 2 diabetic patients were taken as study group. Fasting and postprandial blood sugar was estimated by glucose oxidase peroxidase method and ADA activity by Guisti and Galanti colorimetricmethod. The mean ADA level in the serum of study group was significantly higher than that of controlgroup. The ADA activity significantly correlated with fasting blood sugar , post prandial blood sugarand also with duration of diabetes. The present study concludes Keyword :Adenosine deaminase, Insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
