SERUM MAGNESIUM STATUS IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

Abstract : Type2 diabetes mellitus is a non - autoimmune, complex , heterogenous and polygenic metabolic disease characterized by impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance and abnormal glucose homeostasis. As per International Diabetes Federation the number of diabetes is said to raise from 40.9 million to 69.9million by the year 2025 in India. Diabetes is linked to perturbation in mineral metabolism. Hypomagnesemia is said to occur in patients with Diabetes mellitus. In type2 diabetes mellitus hypomagnesemia can be a consequence or a cause of increased insulin resistance. Hypomagnesemia may be due to increased urinary loss, low dietary intake or impaired absorption of magnesium compared to healthy individual. Hence the present study is done to compare serum magnesium levels in type2 diabetic patients with healthy controls and to correlate magnesium levels with fasting blood sugar levels.50 clinically diagnosed type2 diabetic patients (25males and 25 females) were included in the study group and 50 healthy individuals (25 males and 25 females) were included in the control group. There is a statistically significant decrease in mean magnesium levels in study group compared to control group. There is a statistically significant inverse correlation between serum magnesium concentration and fasting blood sugar levels. To conclude serum magnesium levels are lower in type2 diabetes mellitus and therefore at increased risk of micro and macrovascular complications.
