Abstract
This study analyzes the factors explaining the growth of personal vehicles i.e. of two-wheelers and four-wheelers in Delhi from 1980-81 to 2005-06. The study reveals that the factors determining the growth of personal vehicles are real per capita income, number of bus fleet and expansion of metro rail route. It is also observed that the growth of personal vehicles has direct relationship with the increase in per capita income and an inverse relationship with that of bus fleet. From the study it can also be concluded that the expansion of metro route could have an adverse impact on personal vehicles. This implies that, an improvement in quality and quantity of bus transit system and expansion in metro rail route may slow down the growth of personal vehicles in Delhi.
