Abstract
Sugarcane bagasse is lignocellulosic waste that has been considered as promising source for bioethanol production in Indonesia because of its abundant carbohydrate resources. The objective of this research is to study effects of alkaline pretreatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis on pulp characterization and reducing sugar production as raw material for bioethanol.Sugarcane bagasse was pretreated by two kind of alkaline solution; alkali or NaOH (1%, 2%, 3%) and lime or Ca(OH)2 (0,1, 0,2, 0,3 g Ca(OH)2/g biomass) at 121°C for 30, 60 and 90 minutes.Alkali more effective to remove lignin than lime pretreatment so the result showed alkali pretreatment produce highest reducing sugar yield than lime. But, harsher conditions would contribute to decrease the sugar which is caused by cell damage and recrystallization of cellulose.Highest reducing sugar yield was resulted from 48 hours of enzymatic hydrolysis after NaOH and Ca(OH)2 pretreatment were 45,69% and 28,42%, respectively.
