Abstract
The author explores scenographic experience of Baki Urmanche
(1897–1990) at the Tatar theatre named after G. Kamal in 1920–1950-ies. There analyzed a number of drawings and sketches of the Tatar costume (traditional urban and rural опеы) which serve an example of creative interpretation and respect towards the traditional Tatar clothing. Baki Urmanche enriched the Tatar theatre with new opportunities through strengthening the decorative component in the direction of ornamentation. He gave a start to overcoming naturalistic ethnographic accuracy in favour of artistic imagery devoid of household specific attachment. Urmanche achieved such results in the field of scenography thanks to his professionalism as well as to his creative flair and ability to look into the future.
