Fyodor Chizhov in Search of the “Image Art”

The article is devoted to the views of Fyodor Vasilyevich Chizhov, a Slovophil, on Russian church paintings in which he took interest in connection with Alexandr Ivanov's work at the rotable of the Resurrection of Christ for Christ the Savior Cathedral. While in his publications of the 1846—1847 he saw the future of these paintings in the creative work of the educated artists, ten years later he laid his hopes for the revival of Russian icon-painting predominantly on the icon-painters who, as he thought, had never left the Church and therefore only needed to conform to the standards of art.
