Abstract

The German writer and philosopher Novalis in his novel “Heinrich von Ofterdingen” often refers to the German folklore. Many motifs of his novel refer to the German fairy tales. The typology of similarity and difference with fairy tales is associated to the growth of national consciousness. This fact determines the interest for the folklore as a solid base for the national culture development. The motif of seeing a flower in a dream reminds of the fairy tale “Jorinda and Joringel”, the motif of a girl— a flower or the transformation of a girl into a flower is shown in such tales as “Carnation” and “Darling Roland”. Nevertheless, if in the fairy tale the tale reveals its content, the fairy tale by Novalis cannot be separated from the myth, it contains the main ideas of the author, and must show the so-called “magic idealism”, the harmony and unity of the world, preached by Novalis.
