Abstract
The article is about the history of the organization and activities of the so-called free art workshops in Tambov in 1919. Using unique archival materials, the author reveals the conceptual basis of the ideas of “free art education” and analyzes the attempts to connect to the least popular theories of the time “production art”, designed to be an alternative to the “pure art” and meet the first urgent needs of the workers. Particular attention is paid not previously studied the activities of the sculptor Boris Lavrov as an organizer and reformer SGHM Tambov, as well as an active supporter and theorist of “production art”.
