Abstract
The following article reveals the role of ambivalent imagery in
Surrealist works, which either relates to antique mythology (e. g. centaurs, the Minotaur, chimaras) or utilizes this subject in order to create unique lore. Antique monsters have been highly sought for by the members of this art movement, who considered the “intermediacy” of state and form to be one of the core aesthetic principles.
