Abstract
The name of Maxim Vorobyov associated with formation and
flourishing of romantic landscape painting school. Artist and teacher, he made a significant contribution to the development of Russian romantic landscape and influenced many outstanding artists. During the years of his teaching career, he has enriched the academic artistic method (which built on the classic plants) with romantic, emotional perception of nature. However, since the late 1840s romanticism, which played progressive role in the 1830s, became a decadent phenomenon and was criticized by his contemporaries. This article describes the evolution of the teaching of landscape painting at the Academy of Arts in 1820—1850-ies with a focus on Vorobyov's activities and subsequent criticism of romanticism
