Analysis of Foreign Trade Structure of Labor Intensive Goods in ASEAN-5 Countries

Abstract

With globalization process, trade in goods and services has increased rapidly. This situation on the one hand it has changed the structure of foreign trade on the other hand increased the competitiveness of foreign trade. Intra-industry trade is made of both imports and exports belong to the same industrial goods. Among industrialized countries a significant portion of the foreign trade in the form of intra-industry trade. The concept of competitiveness show that share the world with goods and services trade a country. The concept of competitiveness not only for the country, it is available in firms and industries. According to the factor intensity, goods are divided five groups which are raw material, labor-intensive, capital intensive, easy to imitate R&D based and hard to imitate R&D based. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the structure of foreign trade of labor-intensive goods in ASEAN-5 countries. 2000-2014 period was used in this study. Two methods were used in this study. Firstly, intra-industry trade structure of the labor-intensive goods were analyzed. Secondly, it analzyed the competitiveness of labor-intensive goods. As a result of in this study, it was seen that the level of intra-industry trade is high in labor-intensive goods. In the analysis of competitiveness, it was found to be high competitiveness of labor-intensive goods in Indonesia and Thailand. The competitiveness of labor-intensive goods are less in Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.
