Abstract
The authors consider the complex linguistic phenomenon of irony, as one of the categories of comic. Proverbs and sayings, being phraseological units, have a vivid imagery and stylistic coloring by their nature. Their introduction into the text is conditioned by the desire of the authors to strengthen the expressive coloring of the sentence. Stylistic means are distinguished and described, through which irony is realized in Japanese proverbs and sayings. Among the stylistic devices by which irony is realized in proverbs and sayings outside the context, one can single out trails. Trails are used in all their diversity, creating ironic images of objects from the world around us
