It is known that in XVI-XVIII centuries did not exist special methods of teaching Russian as a foreign language, all learning was limited to the mechanical learning of the alphabet Church Slavonic language and Church books without translation into the native language of foreigners and schools lacked skilled human resources, which in addition to Russian, and even native language learners, not textbooks, focused on this student category, which according to the authors, has led to the ineffectiveness of training and pushed any desire for learning the Russian language. The authors also talk about the relevance of the described system of training and the positive results that followed from its use in the multinational regions of Russia: total number enrolled in the Russian language increased from million in 1860 to four million in 1900.
