Abstract

The relevance of the presented review is determined by the fact that negative processes occurring in the society cause the inevitable increase of risks of victimization. This is particularly important for student youth who are characterized by the highest social activity, as well as the intensive development of intellect and personality. The aim of the review was to study and summarize results of modern research on students' victim behavior. The analysis of recent studies shows that there is currently a relatively small number of investigations purported on the exploring the victim characteristics of youthful age group. The analysis of modern psychological literature has shown that young persons have the socio-psychological features determining victim behavior. As one of the main factors that determine the propensity to victim behavior, the inadequate level of self-esteem is identified. Researchers consider gender features of sexual victimization of student youth; other researchers identify significant differences in the intrapersonal determinants between hyper-victim, middle-victim and none-victim young men and women. It was concluded that meaningful orientations are the most important part in the meaning sphere of hyper-victim persons. Theoretical conclusions of the review include the statement that the propensity to victim behavior is determined by both objective factors of external conditions and internal personal factors; studies of victimological features are aimed at identifying determinants and factors of victim behavior; also the significance of the meaning sphere of an individual for persons prone to victim behavior is revealed. In addition, in the article, the study we conducted is briefly described, which was aimed at investigation of life meaning orientations in students prone to victim behavior. Based on the study's results, we made conclusions about the existence of significant differences in the life meaning orientations of students with different types of victim behavior, and also that victim behavior can be interrelated both with the low and with the high meaningfulness of life.
