TRANSLATORS’ DISTANCE ON-LINE TRAINING IN THE USA

Abstract

The introducing and development of information technologies has affected the translators' training in the US. Currently, the open and distance learning (ODL) of translators is widely spread in the US. This kind of training involves purposeful, controlled, intensive independent work of students who can study in a convenient place, on an individual schedule with a set of special training facilities. The students usually contact their teachers and group mates via Internet. The purpose of this type of training is to prepare students for full and effective participation in public and professional activities in the modern information and telecommunication society. The purpose of the article is to research the varieties of distance and on-line forms of translators' training in the United States and to learn the peculiarities of its implementation. On-line learning helps to remove the feeling of distance between the teacher and the students. On-line translators' training can be distributed, mixed (hybrid) and flexible. Distributed learning involves the use of various multimedia and educational tools to bridge the distance between a teacher and a student. Teaching materials and activities are distributed to the students with the help of Internet technologies that play the role of a mediator between a teacher and a student. Mixed (hybrid) learning involves the use of various strategies, methods and techniques of learning, including electronic and printed resources. Students attend class and meet with the faculty and group mates in the premises of the educational institution, but, at the same time, they also study individually (on their own) using electronic or printed teaching resources. Flexible learning provides a wide range of choices for what, when, where and how students can study. Students attend classes in class and meet with the faculty and group members, but learning is also complemented by online resources that are accessible to students outside classrooms. The article analyzes distance online translators' training, reveals the peculiarities of its implementation and examines typical online translators' training programs in the US for the first time in domestic pedagogical science. The experience of implementing distance online translators' training is perspective for its further introduction in Ukrainian educational institutions. Open distance learning of translators in the US is a common phenomenon and is characterized by the following features: application of specialized technologies and means of training; introduction of information and telecommunication technologies into training; knowledge quality control test systems based on information technologies; flexibility of training; modularity of training; parallel learning; asynchronous learning; new role of a teacher; new requirements for those who study; economic effectiveness of training.
