Abstract
In the present article the language functions in society are considered. This paper deals with the view points of various authors, the conclusion is drawn that R.O. Jakobson's viewpoint, who distinguishes in general 6 functions (emotive function, i.e. expression of feelings and will of speaking; conative function, when in language a vocative, an imperative and a modality are expressed; referential function, i.e. expression of objects, events of the external world; metalingual function, i.e. when we speak about object language in other language; phatic function, when we want to come into contacts with the world surrounding us and, at last, poetic function), is accepted by most of authors. In the article each of these functions is in detail described.
