Abstract

Autism is a pervasive disorder experienced by a person from birth or a toddler who makes himself unable to relate socially or communicate normally. A good parent's understanding of autism make the parents do not necessarily rule out the education of children who suffer from autism. A good self-acceptance from parents will allow their child to go to a regulatory school known as an inclusion school. Shadow teacher is someone wjo can help classroom teacher in assisting autistic children in following the learning process. The existence of shadow teacher in “Sekolah Kreatif” Junior School of Muhammadiyah as an effort of the school to provide assistance and part of the educational process for students with special needs. This research is a qualitative research with symbolic interaction approach. The results showed that shadow teacher interactions with autistic children in inclusion schools were part of a symbolic interaction. The process of symbolic interaction between shadows with autistic children is mediated by the symbols used to represent an object. Symbols used in the form of spoken, body, cues and pictures language.
