A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS AS LINERS IN LANDFILLS

Landfill liners have a great significance when it comes about the matter of management and handling of wastes irrespective of its nature. Wastes can be of different categories viz., municipal, industrial, hazardous, and low level radioactive. Till date variety of options have been made regarding the disposal of wastes like incineration, composting, open dumping, pyrolysis, landfilling etc. Even with the advent of various innovative techniques open dumping remains the favourite in many developing countries like India. Among all the options, landfilling proves to cause less hassles due to its various advantages the main factor of it being eco-friendly provided proper lining systems to prevent ground water contamination and gas collection and monitoring systems to collect and arrest the emission of methane gas which can further be made useful and controlled. Development of reliable models on methane emissions helps in attenuating greenhouse gas emissions from landfills (Danhui Xin et al., 2016) [1]. In some European countries like Spain nearly 83% of their wastes are disposed by means of landfills (Fransisco J. Colomer et. al. 2016) [2]. Provision of landfills alone can't help manage the wastes properly. It can have various negative impacts like groundwater contamination in the absence of a proper lining system. Many researchers have done experiments with a variety of soils andsynthetic materials such as geosynthetic clay liners (GCL) using geotextiles and geomembranes. In this review paper a detailed study on works done on the usefulness of different materials as liners for landfill is done.
