The effect of types of dictionaries on Iranian EFL Learners' vocabulary retention

Abstract
The present research investigated whether bilingual and monolingual dictionaries had an effect on vocabulary retention and the difference between male and female EFL learners when they used different types of dictionaries. Participants were asked to answer two tests that a period of time existed among them to check the retention and the following outcomes were revealed: 1- use of bilingual dictionaries was practical and results in learning but, monolingual dictionaries were of much more value and could be more effective in vocabulary retention for both male and female students. 2-The difference between male and female students was not significant, but female learners memorized new words more carefully and for longer periods of time than boys.
