Abstract

This article discusses about how a woman that was literate, historian and member of the Academia Sergipana de Letras, Maria Lígia Madureira Pina, contributes through her book The Woman in History (A Mulher na História), published in 1994, to consolidate the human rights of women, regarding the Maria da Penha Law. Through literature review, it is possible to analyze and gather information on the subject, which resulted in four development chapters, and were linked to the extent of specific objectives. Thus, it is first brought a short biography of the trajectory of Lígia Pina as she was popularly called, including comments about her work cited above. Posteriorly, it is shown the context of the creation of the law number 11.340/06, highlighting some fundamental rights. Furthermore, the relation among the law and the work of Lígia Pina and some actions of the Brazilian State contextualised with the presentation of the numbers of domestic violence after the term of the Maria da Penha law are shown. With regard to the relation of The Woman in History (A Mulher na História) and this law, it is concluded that Pina cites numerous women that have struggled through the course of history in defense of their rights. Such women served certainly as an example to people who came together to form a consortium with a view to draw up the law number 11.340/06. In addition, they will serve as models for individuals who decide to vindicate any rights, specially in the women context.
