Abstract

Nowadays the demands of direct contacts of Ukrainian speaking specialists with their foreign colleagues cause the necessity both to understand socio-cultural peculiarities of their speech and to use language phenomena represented in literary texts of different genres. This point of view is the most topical for philologists whose proficiency is unimaginable without a good command of all expressive means the English language possesses. However, the existing methodology of teaching the English language and literature does not provide students with the designated skills. Therefore, the purpose of the suggested article is to represent an effective methodology enabling the activation of the typical lexical, grammatical, and stylistic units of English literary works in the future philologists' professional speech. As an example, we consider the analysis of the short story by J. Galsworthy «The Apple-Tree». Having read the analysis of this text, we came to the conclusion that it comprises only its understanding and retelling. The linguistic material does not get into students' active lexical and grammatical minimum and is, therefore, quickly forgotten. To avoid these problems we suggest analyzing literary texts according to the compressive method of English language teaching introduced by R. Martynova. Its essence is seen in mastering a reduced volume of the linguistic material and maximally frequent use of its each unit in various form and content interactions with all previously studied ones. It involves assimilation of the material, within which there is a six-time repetition of its each unit in various linguistic combinations. According to the mentioned steps the algorithm for the development of the skills under study has been worked out. It includes a pre-text, a text and a post-text stages. On each stage students perform various actions with the learned linguistic phenomena in their six linguistic combinations. This way of analyzing English literary texts will not only provide a deep understanding of their content, but will also significantly enrich students' vocabulary with typical stylistic means.
