Abstract
The comparison between High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) and High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) has been a topic which has gained a lot of attention overtime. Different scholars have concluded that there is a huge difference between HVDC and HVAC. HVDC transmission system ability to transmit bulk power over long distances through the land and sea has been the greatest advantage it has over HVAC. It was discovered that HVDC has very low corona loss and requires less insulation and lower voltage drop. A brief history of HVDC and HVAC was included in the study and a key comparison between both transmission systems was done. It was discovered that Alternating Current (AC) is more expensive than Direct Current (DC) and HVDC transmission has less corona and radio interference than that of HVAC, although HVAC also has its own advantage. This study examines two ways electrical energy is transmitted and discusses what the better choice should be in the engineering community.
