Abstract

The main objective of the study is to propose a virtual reference information service program to improve the service model of reference and to facilitate collaborations and encourage effective communication between librarians and their patrons. This study determined the perception of the academic librarians in the integration of VRIS in terms of usefulness, ease of use, ICT skills and implementation intention to the selected academic libraries in Benguet Province. It also gauged the factors in the implementation and administration of VRIS based on IFLA Digital Reference Information Guidelines in terms of Reference Policy, Planning, Staffing, Training, Interface Design, Legal Issues, Publicity and Promotion, Evaluation and Collaboration. The researcher utilized the descriptive method in completing the study and used a research modified questionnaire to survey the entire 57 academic librarian from twelve (12) selected academic schools. It is found out in the study that respondents are not fully aware of the scope and importance of VRIS in their job as perceived by the respondents in the implementation of VRIS. It is also noted that respondents are strongly in agreement with all the factors set by IFLA. It is recommended that a VRIS technology plan, VRIS training plan, VRIS Gantt chart, and a VRIS Program be considered in the implementation and administration of VRIS in order to boost the confidence of the librarians in using ICT. It is also recommended that the guidelines set by the International Federation of Library Association for the implementation and administration of VRIS be followed thoroughly.
