An Overview of the Khutbas Services of the Religious Affairs Directorate

Duties of the Directorate of Religious Affairs in Turkey are stated as ‘carrying out religious affairs pertaining to faith, worship and moral principles, informing the society on religion and adminis-tering places of worship. Khutbas in fridays and religious days are critically important among these services. However, they are sometimes questioned in terms of their contents, language and presentation. The Directorate of Religious Affairs puts an empha-sis on those issues.This article aims to mention the place of the khutba in Islam and also to discuss the status of the khutbas in the transition from the Ottoman State to the Republic and the activities of the Directorate of Religious Affairs related to the khutbas (preparation, subjects, content analysis and studies aimed at improving the khutbas
