Abstract
During World War II, a genocide of the civil Polish population was carried out by the Ukrainian nationalists. Numerous amount of survivors were forced to flee their homes and to wander elsewhere for a place to live. These people were deprived of everything, and were hungry, wounded and traumatised. They were helped by the Central Welfare Council and Polish Welfare Committee. However, the most valuable and effective help came from their compatriots, who took them in under their own roofs and provided the victims with nourishment, transport and took care of the orphaned during the challenging war conditions. These remarkable generous actions in Poland's history remains relatively unknown.
