Abstract
Polysemy, in contrast to monosemy (a word having one meaning), can be defined as a linguistic unit changing its meaning following context. Ancient Arab linguists studied this phenomenon in the Holy Qurřan and called it ŖAl-Ishtirak Allafdhiŗ or ŖAl-Mushtarak Allafdhi". In Arabic, polysemy may be prepositional, verbal or nominal. This paper will discuss the various meanings of two words ŖUmmaŗ and ŖDeanŗ as used in Qurřan and show how they can be translated Into English.
