Abstract
This article analyzes the behavior of the middle unstressed vowels in missives from a non illustrious couple of the early twentieth century. This is a diachronic study, that takes some of the precepts of the Historical Sociolinguistics and investigates the relationship between the variation in graphematic representation of these vowels, in the 1930s, and the degree of contact with the authors writing models. More specifically, at first, the occurrences are selected from the current written models. In order to verify that the actual data reflect graphematic deviations or match the pattern in force, it is also used written records of two major newspapers at the same time. Thus, it appears now the correspondence between the journals and letters, or its distance, as some cases reflect, albeit at different levels, speech marks and/or insecurity about the then current spelling standards.
