EPIDEMIOLOGICAL FEATURES OF EYE DISORDERS MORBIDITY AND DISABILITY IN RUSSIA AND ABROAD

The article describes in detail the epidemiology of eye disorders in the Russian Federation and abroad. Literature review shows a high prevalence of these diseases in the population of the Russian Federation and foreign countries. Moreover, eye disorders are an important medical and social problem being one of the causes of disability of the population. At the same time, recent estimates of the World Health Organization concerning the global scope and causes of eye disorders confirm the fact that 80% of all the causes of vision disorders could be prevented or cured. High prevalence and medical and social significance of eye disorders emphasize the importance of research aimed at developing recommendations for improving the principles of prevention and clinical follow-up of patients with these diseases, as well as recommendations for monitoring the organization of eye care to the population. These measures will be important for prevention of medical and economic burden caused by eye disorders morbidity and disability.
