Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of infertility on the psychological effects of infertility, marital relationship and sexual intercourse in women diagnosed with infertility. Materials and Methods: 50 female patients who applied for infertility assessments in Infertility outpatient clinic of Istanbul University Medical Faculty, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department and TC. The study included 40 healthy female control groups in the Ministry of Health No. 2 Mother and Child Health and Family Planning Center. Semi-structured interview form, Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Scale, Symptom Check List, Maudsley Marriage Questionnaire were applied. Statistical evaluation of the study was performed using SPSS 9.0 statistical program. Results: Depression scores, anxiety levels, and severity of psychological symptoms were significantly higher in infertile patients than the control group. No significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of marital relationship and sexual intercourse. Significant relationships were found between age, educational status, economic status, working status and depression scores. The duration of infertility, duration of infertility treatment and length of marriage were found to be increased in major depression and general symptom levels of SCL-90R. Conclusion: The importance of variables such as age, economic status, working status, educational status, duration of infertility and duration of treatment are important for psychological reactions against infertility. Considering that the differences in the applications of assisted reproductive techniques affect patient populations in different ways, more research is needed to understand the psychological effects of these applications.
