LEADERSHIP STYLES OF RECTORS OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF MAURITIUS

Abstract
The present study was designed to examine the different styles of leadership demonstrated by rectors of state and private sector secondary schools of Mauritius as perceived by the educators. From 11 private schools and 09 state secondary schools of Mauritius, 250 educators were selected through stratified random sampling. For data collection a closed-ended questionnaire was used, and analyzed by conducting through mean, standard deviation, Paired samples test, and Independent samples t-test) through a Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The results show that majority of the rectors had a Democratic leadership style while a considerable number of rectors were also using the Laissez-faire leadership style. There was also an important difference in Authoritative leadership styles of male and female rectors but there was no significant difference among Laissez-faire and Democratic leadership styles demonstrated by male and female rectors. A significant difference in leadership styles of male and female rectors working in state and private secondary schools of Mauritius was also found.
