Abstract
The article is devoted to the role of foreign languages in the novel by the English writer Hilary Mantel “Wolf Hall”. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that the artistic features of the novel in Russia are still poorly understood. Taking into account the specifics of the research, the article defines the term “polylinguism”. The multilanguage of the whole novel is considered, as well as in the speech characteristic of the main character - Thomas Cromwell. Attention is paid to the peculiarities of translation by the author of a foreign language material. It is concluded that the author deliberately adds individual lexemes and their combinations to the speech of the characters on a foreign language, in relation to the entire text. This technique can be considered as one of the means of creating an image of both the character and the whole historical time
