Abstract

Publication explores significant imput of independent graphic workshops in the American printmaking in the second half of the twentieth century. Brief overview sums up main preconditions that led to the graphic boom in postwar America, including government support for graphic arts and artists in difficult economic times of the Great Depression in the 1930s, significant European influence as a result of immigration of famous European artists to the United States in the midst of World War II, as well as the role of the United States as a post war global leader, including in the field of culture. The phenomenon of these workshops, format of their work, their contribution to the development of graphic art in America and the world are thoroughly studied. Emphasis is placed on the artistic collaborations with famous American artists as a main essence of the workshops` work, with the specific examples of such cooperation and its role for the global art and printmaking in the United States of this period.
