Abstract

The article presents the problem of studying the psychological features of self-esteem in middle-aged men with musculoskeletal disorders. The limited empirical data concerning the study of self-esteem of persons with musculoskeletal disorders due to injuries, ie acquired, comparison of self-assessment with regard to different forms of nosology, necessitates this type of study. The purpose of the article is to compare the empirical indicators of the components of self-assessment in men with disorders of the cervical and lumbar spine. It was found that the loss of physical health, impaired basic motor functions are the dominant factors in lowering self-esteem, especially difficult for a man is the loss of mobility and ability to perform "male" function, be a "protector", "breadwinner" for loved ones. Non-acceptance of one's own "I", due to physiological problems, creates internal contradictions, the inability to achieve the formed ideal in society. The study using the methods of S. Panteleev and V. Stolin revealed that the representatives of both groups ("necks" and "spikes") have differences in the manifestation of the components of self-composition, which is associated with the impossibility of free movement and lack of social mobility. Men who have limited lower limb movements and are confined to a wheelchair are more prone to self-blame, secrecy, and internal conflict. Although men who have disorders of the cervical spine have problems with fine motor skills, hand movements, they are still more confident, and expect a positive attitude from others. But despite the diagnoses, all men are characterized by internal conflict, doubts about their abilities and achievements. The results of the pilot study can be used to develop rehabilitation programs, which should include methods and techniques of psychological support aimed at correcting the components of self-esteem with an emphasis on the preserved functions of the musculoskeletal system and strengthening men's internal resources.
