Abstract

The article examines the development of Ukrainian bookmaking in Transcarpathia in the context of pan-European processes under the influence of socio-political and socio-economic factors under the difficult conditions of the low level of literacy of the local population, aggravation of national-confessional confrontation, ignored by the authorities cultural and educational needs of Ukrainians. It was revealed that the Greek-Catholic clergy played a decisive role in the creation of books, manuals and textbooks in their native language, in particular, Mukachevo bishops J. de Camelis, M. Olshavsky, I. Bradach, G. Bizantsi, A. Bachinsky, members of Greek-Catholic societies and the Order of St. Basil the Great. Books by the authorship of the Greek-Catholic clergy create territorial linguistic unity, reflect cultural, the spiritual life of the region and the struggle of Transcarpathian Ukrainians for their authenticity, autonomous and political rights. The article reveals the educational opportunities of the books in the native language in the growth of the intellectual, spiritual and national resources of society in the conditions of rapid socio-historical transformations of Transcarpathia. The regional features of the creation of Ukrainian books with the participation of the Greek-Catholic clergy were identified. The language issue for Transcarpathia remains the issue, which reflects all other political and cultural problems in Transcarpathian region. The development of the literary language of the Transcarpathian people for a long time approached different stages of development – from the language of the Church Slavonic or Slavonic languages (Russian and Ukrainian), until an independent language was formed. The value of Ukrainian early printed books as a national cultural heritage is determined and the social significance of the Ukrainian book is emphasized. The prospects of using the potential of the Ukrainian book to popularize national culture among the peoples of the world are outlined.
