Abstract

The article is devoted to the problems of sociolinguistics as a complex scientific discipline that studies aspects of the interaction of language and society that are relevant both linguistically and sociologically. We proceed from the assumption that the current tendency to study the problems of both the natural and human sciences is the relativity of the boundaries between them. The borderline areas of knowledge are much better understood, as a result of rapid penetration. Nowadays, the problem of the language and society interaction is becoming increasingly important. A language is considered both as a result and as part of social development, reflecting this language, stimulating the changes in it. New communication needs require new forms of language design, and those that have lost their adequacy pass into passive or even disappear. From the viewpoint of language application and usage, it is necessary to take into account "external" factors of various contents when teaching a language, because the linguistic analysis is directly related to the social characteristics and speech situation of the communicant. The main discipline dealing with the "external" factors of the language, such as the social essence, language functions and development, is sociolinguistics or social linguistics, as one of the areas of linguistics and having its own object and research methods. The urgency of the problem is determined by the necessity of the orientation of the student in the diversity of the modern linguistics problems, the possibility of sociolinguistic methods application while writing year papers and diploma thesis on linguistic issues. The aim of the article is to form students-philologists' notion about one of the modern linguistics directions - sociolinguistics, standing at the boundaries of several sciences: linguistics, sociology, social psychology, ethnology etc. First of all, sociolinguistics is a single set of ideas how people use the language to create, express and ascertain their needs. At the same time, the study of social factors affecting the language that sociolinguistics deals with helps to penetrate deeper and more detailed into the nature of the language, to identify the conditions for its functioning in the society, since there are deep connections between the social functions of the language and the language system itself.
