Abstract
Fog computing was introduced to cope up with the problems faced by cloud computing, i.e., high latency, the distance between data centers and users, locality of data centers. Fog computing brings the services provided by the cloud to the edge of the network. In a fog computing setup, requests from end users are handled by fog nodes located in close proximity to that layer. Users are aware of where fog nodes are located, and latency is decreased because of the shorter distance between end users and fog nodes. Fog computing is a decentralized method that sits between the end users and the cloud. Hence, it works as a helping hand to the cloud to provide computing, networking, and storage services near the end-user layer. E-healthcare, intelligent traffic management, smart homes, intelligent waste management systems, smart cities, scientific workflows are widespread applications of fog computing in this era of digitization.
