Abstract

Super finishing the interior geometry of difficult materials is the motivation for the development of magnetorheological abrasive flow finishing (MRAFF). Carbonyl iron particles and abrasive particles exhibiting a magnetorheological action in nonmagnetic viscoplastic base fluids are crucial to the success of this technique. The amount of finishing action is controlled by columns of carbonyl iron particles (CIPs) in a magnetic field, which provide radial and tangential pressures to the abrasive particles. Both the machine and the medium have pistons and cylinders in abrasive flow machining. The media piston is pushed back and forth by the machine's ram, which causes the media within to flow past the inner wall of the workpiece and into the machine. The basic method of material removal is the extrusion pressure. The framework for CIP chains and a methodology for gauging surface roughness have been provided.
