Abstract

Introduction. In the context of European integration processes, academic integrity in higher education institutions is of great importance as a factor that determines the credibility of the results of a scientific master's research. Purpose. The article aims to study academic integrity in terms of detecting plagiarism in academic texts of higher education students during their master's research and to develop recommendations for minimizing its manifestations. Methods. Literature analysis, induction and deduction were used. Results. In master's research, the most common case is plagiarism, which is due to several factors: students do not have sufficient competence and motivation to conduct independent research; lack of time due to the educational load and employment at the place of employment; lack of skills in working with literature sources; lack of proper application in practice of penalties provided for by law to violators of academic integrity. The presence of plagiarism in all its manifestations in academic texts in the course of master's research is unacceptable, as it levels the value of the results obtained and is an indicator of the low quality of education in general. The level of uniqueness of the text in academic papers is determined by software: AntiPlagiarism.NET, StrikePlagiarism, Іstio, Plagscan, EduBirdie. The project to promote academic integrity in Ukraine (SAIUP) (2016-2019) is an impetus for the formation of academic culture in Ukraine. The programme resulted in the introduction of the course «Fundamentals of Academic Writing» with a module on academic integrity, individual and qualification papers are being checked for the level of uniqueness of the text. Originality. Compliance by higher education students with the rules and regulations of academic integrity is an indicator of trust in the results of research work. Among all the manifestations of academic integrity violations, the most common is academic plagiarism, which can be embodied in the paraphrasing of a borrowed text without reference to the source, combining excerpts from several sources in one text, replacing phrases, using a borrowed text as one's own, etc. To minimize the manifestations of plagiarism in scientific texts, it is necessary to constantly monitor the awareness of higher education students about academic integrity through surveys; to include a topic (module) on academic integrity in the research educational component; to introduce non-formal education on academic integrity; when establishing the fact of plagiarism in an academic text, to apply to violators the penalties provided for by the Law of Ukraine «On Education». Conclusion. Based on the results of the study, the author proposes several steps to minimise the violation of academic integrity in terms of plagiarism in the research process of higher education students: permanent monitoring of awareness of higher education students about academic integrity through a survey; inclusion of a topic (module) on academic integrity in the research educational component; introduction of non-formal education on academic integrity; when establishing the fact of plagiarism in an academic text, apply to the offenders the penalties provided for by the Law of Ukraine «On Education».
