Abstract
There are two main tendencies to mosque architecture in today’s Turkey. One of them is the reproductions of Classic Period of Ottoman architecture with the assumption of maintaining the tradition, which built on the notion that mosques are reflected as stationary object in the past and often perceived to be a museum. The latter is new architectural designs of the eclectic combination of various architectural styles from different periods to start out to be modern. Intended to build as modern mosque architecture, Üsküdar Şakirin Mosque with the emergence of postmodern in an eclectic approach is taken into consideration in the context of identity and transformation of society as well as religion and identity corruption. In this study, there are two main approaches to evaluation of Şakirin Mosque: “those who criticize professionally and technically” and “those who support politically”. Both of the groups which deal with the topic for different anxieties and aims are too far away from understanding the considerable role of Şakirin Mosque in expression of social transformation and identity (social importance of this mosque design) in Turkey. Şakirin Mosque which 295 was built with the anxiety of a high society mosque and emphasis on “modernity” is not a modern but a postmodern mosque in terms of construction process, people and their characteristics in the process, eclectic interior and exterior design. Şakirin Mosque with the lack of cultural profundity and of identity points out the transformation in the approach to Islam in the current era. It represents the disidentification of corruption in Turkish identity and custom.
