Abstract
Humour has a rebellious and joggling effect on society living. In the time of National Struggle, there used to be caricature publishings not obeying but challenging the negative social conditions. The caricature publishings of that era had an important role on indoctrinating the belief of possbile future victory of the National Struggle into social consciousness. In such caricatures, the enemy were ridiculed and presented as an humble portrait, the existing chaotic flow of the social scene were tried to be interrupted by irony and humour was used as a defense mechanism against the enemy. In social cooperation and integration, the existence of the ‘leader’ character is one of the most important factors. The comic papers supporting National Struggle frequently featured Mustafa Kemal drawings. People not knowing each other but having the same history and shared culture, preserved their support from behind the front-lines, never loosing faith in Mustafa Kemal, via the ‘shared consciousness and belief’’ brought into social memory by the comic papers.
