Abstract

In this article, the paradoxical and ironical existence of an individual in the surveillance societies are analysed which develops on the basis of information society in terms of monitoring and supervision of all his life for the sake of his security. In order to be safe, the supervision of individual and society by the authority focuses becomes permissible like it is described as a “big brother” in Orwell’s novel “1984”. In this context, the ontological paradoxical motto of the individual and society in the surveillance society “I am being monitored therefore I am” becomes a reality. Authority focuses do not only consist of the governmental institutions. The market actors of the neo-liberal system, trading institutions of the “consumption temples” spy on all the privacy of an individual in his everyday life. With the help of internet in particular, credit card, mobile phone and other information-surveillance devices, an individual lives the reality of “Big Brother” in all areas of his life. In fact we are in a complete global closure. Inspired from Foucault’s Big Confinement, global closure in the post-modern times is a hallmark of the authority in the surveillance society.
